At The Sign Maker, we’re always seeking new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to the preservation of the beautiful countryside where we live and work. Our latest endeavour, Twig Mountain, is a project close to our hearts, inspired by our director, Kate.
The Birth of Twig Mountain
Kate observed that smaller twigs and branches often posed a challenge—they were either too cumbersome to burn efficiently in the biomass or burning them outright didn’t feel like the most eco-friendly solution. As anyone who composts knows, twigs can take a long time to break down, often leaving you with bits to sift through later.
Determined to find a better way, Kate envisioned a dedicated area where these twigs could decompose naturally at their own pace. They also create fantastic habitats for wildlife. Mice, shrews, insects, and birds are just a few of the creatures that thrive in these twig mountains and log piles.
Overtime, Kate will add more branches and twigs to the pile and when the bottom layer has decomposed, Shaun with his digger will scoop the decomposed twigs out.
With this in mind, Kate’s husband, Shaun, who is also a director, set to work on landscaping the area for Twig Mountain. The space was then covered in wood chippings generously provided by a local tree surgeon, further enriching the habitat.
Future Plans for Twig Mountain
But Twig Mountain is just the beginning. Kate plans to enhance the area by planting around it, creating additional shelter and food sources for wildlife. Specifically, she intends to plant a hedge of wild cherry plums, which will offer both shelter and fruit for the creatures that make Twig Mountain their home.
At The Sign Maker, we’re excited about the positive impact this project will have on our local environment and the wildlife that depends on it. Twig Mountain is just one of the many steps we’re taking to ensure that our operations are in harmony with nature.
