World Wildlife Day

If you’ve followed along with us for a while, you may know how invested we are in wildlife conservation. While we are specifically interested in the re-wilding of local environments to increase biodiversity across our site in Devon, our efforts span a wide variety of projects. Not only that, but we like to maintain an awareness for how conservation efforts are progressing regionally, nationally, and globally.

World Wildlife Day is the perfect opportunity for us to catch a glimpse into the latest developments in wildlife conservation. This day enables us to join the conversation and learn from experts in the industry. A spotlight on the future of our wildlife supports our philosophy that ‘everybody can make a difference’.

‘Connecting People and Planet’

This year’s theme for World Wildlife Day is ‘Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation’. Given that World Wildlife Day was designed to connect each individual with the natural world, it seems apt that the UN would consider the growing role of technology in wildlife conservation.

While technology and nature may not seem a natural partnership, it’s important that we embrace these advancements for good! We are living in an age of a global digital revolution. Therefore, is exciting to consider how we might utilise advancements in artificial intelligence, internet accessibility, and streaming quality for conservation. This is integral to establishing a reimagined connection between people and the natural world.

Some things to consider: technology enables us to connect and share ideas internationally. However, what does connection look like if not everybody has access to the same advancements in technology. The UN are striving to ensure that nobody gets left behind when it comes to connecting with nature. Additionally, experts would like to be able to track and record the natural changes around us so that we can establish patterns in our conservation. Technology is the perfect tool to facilitate these processes, but we need to be aware of how technology can partner our drive for conservation. This year’s World Wildlife Day should give a platform to this conversation. Aligning visions and working together is the best way to make a significant difference.

How Might We Embrace A Digital Age When Considering Our Own Conservation Efforts?

The main way that we utilise digital advancements for our own conservation is through our online platform. By using our blog and social media to share how we approach conservation as a rurally situated independent business, we hope to inspire others in their re-wilding projects. We use online spaces to connect with individuals and businesses. Through the sharing of information and resources, we have already been able to expand our sustainable development strategy. Consequently, we’re keen to stream this year’s World Wildlife Day online event to get inspired by the experts.

This year’s theme and resources have encouraged us to consider how we might better use partner technology and conservation in our own strategy. For example, we could use ‘remote sensing’ and wildlife camera’s (perhaps overnight) to track the wildlife that is arriving onsite. By establishing how our site is used, we might be inspired to redirect our resources towards particular onsite projects. Additionally, we’ll be continuing to look at how we connect with local businesses in the area to share information.
