It would seem that there is now an international day for everything, but still, Mothering Sunday (and Fathers day) remain dates that people celebrate annually. Mother’s Day is perhaps a day that we often mark without really knowing why! So, we thought we would give you a brief history of Mother’s Day, and take you through our Sign Maker gift guide to help you prepare for this year’s celebrations.
Mothering Sunday dates back as far as the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday of lent, people in the UK would return to their mother church (the church in their parish or where they were baptised). By the 20th century, it had become custom that children who had moved away from home would return to visit family. Domestic servants were given the day off and it was traditional to pick some wildflowers to give to your mother before you arrived. By the 1920s, what started off as a religious celebration, became secular, and now most people celebrate mothers day with cards, gifts and time shared together as a family.
